Most founders never do this math. They see the monthly Bubble bill, wince, and move on. Stack up what you pay over the next two or three years, though, and the numbers get uncomfortable fast.
Staying on a platform is renting. Moving to code is buying the house. This page does the sums for both.
What you actually pay
Your real Bubble cost is more than the plan price:
- Base plan: the monthly price of your plan
- Workload unit overages: variable, and often a surprise
- Plugin subscriptions: anything from $10 to $100 a month
- What never shows up on an invoice: lost deals, lost users and lost time
That last one is sneaky. When a client walks because you can’t offer code ownership, it doesn’t appear in your Bubble dashboard. When a user bounces because a page took twelve seconds to load, there’s no line item for it.
A real example
Here is one founder on the Bubble forum:
“I was paying $28/month when I started. Now I’m sitting at $225.” — eric10
He has maybe 10 to 15 daily users. Here is the two-year math for someone in his position.
Staying on Bubble, two years
| Item | Monthly | Two-year total |
|---|---|---|
| Base plan | $225 | $5,400 |
| Average workload overages | $50 | $1,200 |
| Plugins | $25 | $600 |
| Total | $300 | $7,200 |
That assumes prices stay where they are.
Moving to code, two years
| Item | One-time | Monthly | Two-year total |
|---|---|---|---|
| Site inspection | $500 | — | $500 |
| You pack, we load (example: two months) | $3,000 | — | $3,000 |
| Hosting on AWS or Cloudflare | — | $30 | $720 |
| Total | $3,500 | $30 | $4,220 |
Savings over two years: about $3,000. And from month 25 the gap widens every month, because the code is yours and the hosting bill stays flat.
A smaller app costs less to move, and a complex one with many roles and integrations costs more. The inspection gives you the real number for yours.
The workload unit wildcard
The scariest part of platform pricing is the spike, not the plan.
“7 million workload units used in less than 12 hours! A big fat auto charge bill on the credit card of $1000.” — mitchbaylis, Bubble forum
Left running over a long weekend, that app would have cost around $5,000 in auto-charges. With your own code on AWS or Cloudflare, a loop that misbehaves is a bug to fix, not a surprise bill tied to a pricing model you don’t control.
Work out your own workload costs with the calculator.
When the move pays for itself
The rule of thumb is simple:
Payback period = cost of the move ÷ monthly savings
The $225 a month founder
- Inspection and one month of you pack, we load: $2,000
- Bubble today: $225 a month
- Hosting after the move: $30 a month
- Savings: $195 a month
- Payback: about ten months
The growing startup at $449 a month (plan plus overages)
- Inspection and two months of you pack, we load: $3,500
- Hosting after the move: $50 a month
- Savings: $399 a month
- Payback: about nine months
The agency-built app at $500 a month or more
- Inspection and a two-month full-service move: $5,500
- Hosting after the move: $75 a month
- Savings: $425 a month or more
- Payback: about thirteen months
In each of these the move pays for itself in about a year. That is before counting faster pages, the deals that need code ownership, and how much easier it is to hire developers for a standard codebase.
What you get back besides money
Time. No more tuning workflows to save workload units, and no more platform-specific workarounds.
Peace of mind. No more dreading the next pricing announcement.
“I’ve literally been having nightmares about this.” — mitchbaylis
Options. Selling the company, raising money or hiring a team is easier when the code is an asset you own.
Run your own numbers
- Monthly Bubble plan: $___
- Average monthly overages: $___
- Plugin costs: $___
- Total monthly (lines 1 to 3): $___
- Hosting after the move, usually $30 to $75: $___
- Monthly savings (line 4 minus line 5): $___
- Cost of the move, from your inspection: $___
- Payback (line 7 divided by line 6): ___ months
If your payback is under eighteen months, the move is almost certainly worth it. If your Bubble bill is small and your app is simple, staying put can be the right call, and the inspection will tell you so.
